According to Muthama, the country does not need the creation of more political seats to satisfy the political class.

Speaking in Tala, Matungulu, Machakos county during the burial of Mzee Joseph Mukanza on Friday, Muthama vowed to oppose push for a referendum should it focus on creating political seats.

He said that the country needs electoral reforms to heal from previous political atrocities.

“If you ask me I will tell you that Kenyans do not want a referendum that is focused on creating jobs for the political class,” he said.

Muthama observed that the country’s problems will be solved through electoral reforms.

Muthama asked the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) co-chaired by Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji and his Busia counterpart Amos Wako not to focus on referendum.

“What we want to see is electoral reforms, equitable resource sharing, end to impunity, serious fight against corruption and an end to tribalism,” he stated.

Muthama’s stand on the push for a referendum comes as the BBI team finalizes on collecting views from Kenyans.

On Monday, the BBI team refuted media claims that it has already agreed for the country to hold a referendum.

The committee said it is still collecting and compiling views from Kenyans and will hand over its final report to President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in October.

The Haji led committee assured Kenyans that its final report will not be influenced by politicians.
