Police in Tharaka Nithi County are holding a man who allegedly murdered a friend after a disagreement over a meal of termites.
The incident happened at Kamatungu Estate on the outskirts of Marimanti Town, where Daniel Mutiria Cece was reportedly stabbed by the friend to death over the insects.
According to police, the suspect killed deceased after finding him picking the insects outside his house, and demanded that he surrenders them to him, which the deceased refused.
Tharaka Nithi South Police Commander Kiprop Rutto said that the disagreement resulted in a fist fight, after which the suspect rushed to his home and brother and out a knife and stabbed the deceased four times, killing him on the spot.
The police boss said that he then ran into Marimanti Police Station to avoid the wrath of an angry mob, after which he was immediately locked up, Sunday night.
"The suspect escaped the wrath of the villagers and surrendered at the station where he confessed to stabbing the deceased,” he said.
Ms Jane Muthoni said that the two had spent the day drinking their Mashujaa Day celebrations away.
She found it shameful that grown men would fight over termites, which only children are allowed to eat in that region.
"We are shocked by this incident because we have never witnessed such animosity in this area before,” she said.
The police boss said that the suspect could be arraigned on Tuesday.
