Homa Bay Governor Cyprian Awiti is set to be discharged from Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi after weeks of treatment, his family has confirmed.
The second term ODM boss fell ill in June, two weeks after resuming duties. He had gone to Germany for eye treatment two months earlier, delegating duties to his deputy Hamilton Orata.
His son Michael Awiti, on Monday, said the governor is in the final process of being discharged and that the process will end by the close of business, Monday.
“We are currently undergoing the process of discharge and hopefully before the end of the day, the governor will be out of hospital. He is okay,” his son told the said Awiti's son.
Businessman Erick Okeyo, who visit the governor in hospital on Sunday, said “he was jovial” and would be discharged.
“I was with him on Sunday and he was upbeat. He assured me he would be discharged soon,” said Okeyo.
However, Homa Bay Deputy Governor refused to comment on the governor’s health.
“Kindly speak to the doctors on matters of the governor’s health or his family members. I only deputise him at the county level,” said Orata.
Awiti joins the list of governors who have been dealing with ill health in recent weeks. There have been calls by a section of leaders led by Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma for him to resign.
In the neighbouring Bomet County, Governor Joyce Laboso is still hospitalised, a week after jetting back from India where she was undergoing treatment.
Last year, Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama was hospitalized in the US for three months. He handed over responsibilities to his deputy Amos Nyaribo.
