Mathare Member of Parliament Anthony Oluoch has warned Members of County Assemblies against passing the Punguza Mizigo constitutional amendment bill.
Under the leadership of Thirdway Alliance boss Ekuru Aukot, intense lobbying for the approval of the same has been ongoing at the assemblies, where he needs the approval of at least 24 houses.
But Oluoch on Tuesday warned that as much as the bill promises to allocate more funds to the counties, it had a hidden part which will come back to haunt the MCAs once it is passed.
The ODM MP claimed that its pursuit for lesser constituencies will most likely result in a reduction of wards as well, which will affect the ward representatives in the long run.
"It's very possible that ward reps wataipitisha. Lakini huwezi punguza constituencies na wards zibaki vilevile. Wanapunguza wabunge lakini wakapostpone kupunguza MCAs (It's very possible the ward reps will pass it but you can't reduce constituencies and leave wards intact. They are reducing MPs, but have postponed reducing MCAs.)," he said.
Oluoch made the remarks on Radio Maisha's Bunge La Maisha on Tuesday morning.
He termed the allocation increment narrative as just a bait to nab the MCA's, urging them to abandon the bill and wait for the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report.
"Hii jambo ya pesa kuenda kwa ward reps ni carrot tu ndio wapitishe hiyo. Hii sheria is a poisoned chalice (The narrative of monies going to the ward reps is just a bait carrot. This law is a poisoned chalice)," the MP noted.
Aukot is also pushing for the introduction of a nonrenewable seven-year presidential term, but his proposals have been opposed by a section of politicians allied to the ex-premier Raila Odinga.
Raila, a co-founder of the BBI alongside President Uhuru Kenyatta has insisted that the initiative will also propose better and inclusive constitutional amendments.
