According to the directive issued by Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, all leaders facing criminal cases in court will have their security withdrawn and will also have to surrender their firearms.

"To avoid compromising and demeaning the very essence which the police is mandated, the NPS shall not provide security details to VIP who are involved or suspected to be involved in crime until they are cleared by the courts," said Mutyambai.

So far, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has confirmed the withdrawal of his security. Others reportedly targeted include Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, Nairobi's Mike Sonko, Malindi MP Aisha.

Bahati MP Ngunjiri Kimani has already surrendered his firearm after being summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to record a statement.

However, the ODM nominated senator has criticised the move saying that the said leaders are innocent until proven guilty.

"Being a lawyer, I know that everybody should be treated as innocent until proven guilty. Withdrawing their security would imply that the person who has been charged would be assumed guilty even before the courts do their with," Pareno stated.

The ODM senator believes that the move will put the lives of those charged in court at risk considering their stature in the society.
