Supporters of Jubbaland President Ahmed Madobe poured in the streets of Garissa County to celebrate his win on Thursday.
President Madobe was sworn in for a second term shortly after he was declared the winner of the presidential vote cast after garnering 56 votes out of the 74 votes cast by the regional members of Parliament in the state capital Kismayu.
Residents in Garissa flooded the streets to celebrate the win while those with cars jammed the streets hooting as residents broke into song and dance following the declaration.
“We were online waiting for the results. Most of us have not slept while we were waiting for the results. The people of Garissa are celebrating the win of President Ahmed Madobe,” a resident from Garissa said.
Most of the residents who supported President Madobe said his win will bring peace and security in Kismayu and the borders of North Eastern.
Elders from three larger Ogaden communities living in Garissa had supported his re-election mainly because he has helped the region in the fight against Al-Shabaab militants.
