A family in Kiambu has opened up about the hard times they have seen since their child developed a mental disorder.
The family of 33-year-old Peter Ngugi from Wangige village in Kabete Sub-county has admitted chaining and locking him for 25 years after he developed the problem.
The kin told Citizen Digital that life has never been the same again for the man after his mental status was proven to be in an unhealthy state.
According to his brother, George Ndungu, the family had tried different ways to restore his health but their options ended. He also said that handling the brother has been tough because he requires a special form of care all the time.
He also said that the brother cannot be left alone for long since he is likely to do the unexpected. The family reportedly tried to visit different health facilities in a bid to treat him but nothing was forthcoming until they resorted to giving up over the same.
The man also said that their personal lives have been affected in different ways since the condition was established.
“It has been hard for us as the immediate family and our personal lives have been undermined,” he said, as quoted by Citizen Digital.
The man also narrated that he was once arrested after the villagers reported the family to the police for allegedly torturing the brother.
His mother, Elizabeth Wanjiku, said that he has been going through tough times to ensure that her son gets the basic needs. She has also lamented that there are no government institutions to assist her to get out of the situation.
