Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i has intensified his behind the scenes rallies with 2022 succession battles guiding his moves.

Working closely with President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga, Dr Matiang'i has come out as one of the favourites to succeed President Uhuru or at least be one of major factors in the polls.

A fortnight ago, ODM chairman John Mbadi admitted that Dr Matiang'i is one of heavyweights in the handshake, adding that he will be part of unitary government.

"He used to be in Jubilee inner team and I never knew we would work together. He's one of the most performing ministers. He is going places," Mbadi said at Riokindo High School.

And with Omogusii unity being fundamental, Dr Matiang'i is now keen to unite the community besides having it making use of the anticipated census.

Governors John Nyagarama and James Ongwae, who are pushing for Matiang'i presidency, on Sunday asked residents to be counted in the census so that 'they can matter in future'.

"For us to successfully fight for national leadership, our number is important. Our partners must see the big number. I appeal to all of you to come home and be counted," Ongwae said.

Nyagarama on his part was even more specific, arguing that census exercise will uplift the status of the interior minister Dr Matiang'i at national level.

"Besides resource distribution, our number will matter for Dr Matiang'i. Everyone else must see what he will bring to the table. Let's not disappoint him," he said.

Also, the emergence of a strong Tanga Tanga group funded by DP William Ruto is another major headache. The team works under Kisii Deputy Governor Joash Maangi.

Comprising of over 8 legislators, the team has pitched tent in Kisii and Nyamira, countering another team led by the two governors which leans towards Matiang'i.
