Kisumu Woman Representative Rosa Buyu has questioned the intentions behind Kibra parliamentary hopeful McDonald Mariga's August 26 registration as a voter.
This follows the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC's) confirmation that Mariga, who was initially blocked form the race, is indeed a registered voter.
But Buyu, a member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), now says though he has been approved, he appears to have solely done it to be able to vie in Kibra and not for any other reason.
Speaking on Citizen TV on Tuesday morning, the lawmaker observed that Mariga has never voted in Kenya, making his sudden change of heart questionable.
“Mariga has never bothered to register as a voter in this county and therefore has never voted…The only reason he registered is because he wanted to vie in Kibra…Is that really the spirit of the law?” she posed.
Mariga was on Monday cleared to contest the Kibra parliamentary seat and will clash with ODM's Imran Okoth, ANC's Eliud Owalo among others.
Kibra is considered an opposition zone, owing to their overwhelming support of opposition chief Raila Odinga in the past elections.
