Widows in Kisii County on Thursday unveiled the Kisii Widows Association (KWA) which brought together all widows across Kisii County at Jogoo Primary in Kisii town.
In a two-day seminar organised by Come Together Widows and Orphans organisation, the move was arrived at after it emerged that a number of widows have suffered to an extent of losing property with no action from the authorities.
Dianah Kamande, the founder of the organization - a domestic violence victim - said for a long time, widows have suffered in silence and this marks a new beginning for them.
"My husband attempted to Kill me and our children in 2013 but I escaped. Unfortunately, he committed suicide after thinking I was dead. He left me with serious injuries on my body but I was treated and healed," Kamande stated tearfully.
"I was troubled in my mind how to rescue women who have been left widows like me. With support from friends I came up with an organization with an aim of trying to find out the possible Solution to widows who are being discriminated back at the grassroots," she stated.
Amelia Otono, a legal senior officer from OMBUDSMAN, a commission which fights for the rights of vulnerable people has advised the widows to report any cases of discrimination and violence.
"Widows should know we have a commission that fights for them free of charge. They should not allow people to discriminate them. Let them report at Huduma Centre because we have representatives," She advised.
Amelia said some widows have been chased away from their matrimonial homes and lost property as well.
"Some women don't even know their husbands might have left some property. They are sent to us as unclaimed property. Any widow can freely check if her husband left behind cash or some property," she said.
