The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) taskforce has reached at a referendum as the best remedy for the nation's political troubles, proposing the expansion of the executive.
In a report, the 14-member team has proposed the introduction of a single seven year presidential term and a parliamentary system of not more than 20 ministers.
The BBI has proposed that the president shall have executive powers enabling him to sack his ministers, in a three tier government, which might send the nation to a referendum.
“The President shall hold office for a term not exceeding seven years beginning with the date of assumption of office,” reads a report shared with President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Premier Raila Odinga last week.
Also in the proposal is the formation of a strong Prime Ministerial position and 14 regional governments where the president will be the head of state and commander in chief and the premier the head of government.
It also wants the increase of county allocations from the current 15 to 45 percent.
"Introduce 14 regional governments as per the Bomas draft and create regional assemblies comprising all members of the county assemblies in each region,” it reads.
The team.was compiled by Uhuru and Raila after their March 2018 truce as a show of their goodwill towards a better and united nation.
Now the team is expected to retreat to write its final findings, after months of crisscrossing the nation in search of suggestions.
