Following a horrific car explosion which occurred in Mogadishu, Somalia, on Saturday, Prof Makau Mutua has called for dismemberment of the country at the Horn of Africa.
Mutua argued that the country was beyond reclamation, adding that dividing it up was the only viable solution.
"For God’s sake, Somalia is beyond reclamation. Post-colonial’s Humpty Dumpty has reached its nadir. Let’s face facts — neighboring states need to dismember so-called Somalia and take all of its parts for the sake of the world," he tweeted on Sunday.
The remarks, however, did not auger well with Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi, who mocked the US-based law scholar for making a call he considered inappropriate, from a person of his academic stature.
"So every time a bunch of terrorists kill innocent civilians you dismember a country?...and this from our eminent Professor...Africa a lot of troubles (Shida mob)...," he posted.
Mutua stood his ground arguing that two decades ago, he had hope that Somalia can rise up, but he now believed that the country, just like some other few African States should be dismembered.
"No Grand Mullah. Many African post-colonial states are moral and legal nullities — unviable entities. It’s not just Somalia. Why should Gambia and Lesotho exist, or even Chad? We need to abolish many of them, consolidate others, and dis-aggregate a number of them," he said.
Former Mandera Senator Billow Kerrow also disagreed with Mutua saying Somalia was doing well socio-economically.
"Perhaps you need to visit Somalia; it's doing better than many countries in socio-economic development. As regards 'dismemberment' it's already on...all these blasts and political chaos is largely the work of nations and agencies working towards it. Will they succeed? No!" Kerrow tweeted.
