Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's decision to nominate Anne Kananu Mwenda as his deputy is now hanging on balance even as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission investigates the process that was followed to pick her for the job.
The commission Chief Executive Officer Twalib Mbarak has now written to the County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi asking for the original letter that the embattled Governor used to nominate Kananu for the Deputy Governor position.
" This commission requires the original letter dated January 6, 2020 from the Governor to the speaker, nominating the deputy Governor," read the letter from Mbarak.
According to the report, the action by the EACC could be informed by claims that the Governor could have backdated the letter nominating Kananu for a top job to a date before he was arrested.
This comes even as Sonko faces another battle with the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji who has vowed to challenge Sonko's move to nominate his deputy for allegedly going against his bail terms.
The bail terms which secured Sonko's freedom in December barred him from office. However, the Governor maintains that he is free to exercise the powers of his office, hence his decision to nominate his deputy.
