Pioneer Vice Chancellor of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology Prof Barasa Wangila has died in Aga Khan Hospital, it has confirmed.

The legendary don died on Saturday morning at the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu after months of struggling with an illness, it has emerged.

Prof Kubasu Mwene, the UASU Secretary in Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, confirmed the death, adding that the don has been suck for a while.

"We have received with shock the sad news of the passing on of Prof Barasa Wangila , who has been sick at the Aga Khan hospital, Kisumu. Prof. Wangila was the founder Vice Chancellor of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology , MMUST," he said. 

"On behalf of the Universities' Academic Staff Union, UASU MMUST Chapter which he helped to establish, union members and on my own behalf, I wish to convey heartfelt condolences to the family , relatives and friends," he added in a text message.

The UASU Secretary said the union shall stand with the family during this trying moment. He also said that the association will give support to the family.

"We shall stand by your side during this mourning period. We pray that the Almighty God will grant you the necessary strength to overcome the great grief. May the Lord keep his soul in eternal peace," he said.

Prof Wangila Barasa was first appointed in 2006 by retired President Mwai Kibaki when the university was given charter. He left the institution in 2013 after serving two terms.

The renowned Don is a distinguished scholar in Zoology and Fish Genetics, an area he has been fully involved in research and publication of various academic materials.

After his exit, Prof Asenath Sigot took over in an acting capacity. She left when Prof Fredrick Otieno was appointed as substantive Vice Chancellor. Otieno left in 2018, handing over to Joseph Bosire on acting capacity.

The institution, which became the first of many which were chartered by Kibaki, received the third substantive VC in 2019 July when Prof Asenath Sigot took over again.
