Ouko has since called for a comprehensive review of the Public Audit Act after the announcement of his departure from office.

Ouko said that it is important for his successor to seal all the loopholes that could lead to the loss of public funds.

He noted that cases of government officials looting public funds in different offices have become rampant in the recent past.

Ouko, whose eight-year tenure ended on Monday, said that lack of substantive holder of the post is likely to affect the government in different ways.

He asked the president to ensure that his successor is better than him as far as handling of the operations at the office is concerned.

“I am leaving office, but I do not know who takes over...I do not know who will sign the reports that are due because I am not allowed to do it. This can demoralise auditors who are undertaking their duties. As we talk, there are some critical reports that are pending and unfortunately are likely to get lost,” he said, as quoted by Standard.

President Kenyatta has since asked applicants to present their letters.
