Meningitis is a disease that results from inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain and the spinal cord. This leads to increased fever, stiffness of the neck and abnormal headaches.
It affects all age groups though infants are at greater risk due to their delicate, weak and immature immune system. It is can result from viral, bacterial, fungal or parasitic infections. In some cases, meningitis can be life-threatening, therefore it is important to seek medical attention once you notice the main symptoms.
Here are some of the signs and symptoms of meningitis in children.
1. Poor feeding
A baby with meningitis will not be at ease while feeding. He/she will refuse to eat and when they do, they tend to vomit what they could have eaten.
2. Constant crying
Children suffering from meningitis will break down with a high pitched and moaning cry as a result of the pain they might be going through. The baby will also produce unusual grunting sounds.
3. A bulge in the soft spot of the forehead
This results due to increased pressure or fluid in the brain. It is important to seek medical advice once you notice this sign especially if the baby did not suffer a fall to ascertain the real reason behind the bulging.
4. High fever
Increased temperatures can be as a result of an infection. This might at sometimes be accompanied with shivering or chills. The persistent rise in temperature can be a red flag for your baby's health, seek medical attention as soon as possible.
5. Excessive sleeplessness
A baby suffering from meningitis will take much time before he/she sleeps. The child will sleep more than usual and will not be comfortable waking up. Ensure you visit your doctor if notice this sign.
