Sub-County Director of Education Wickliffe Omoto said the five classrooms at Mkulima Primary School in Kuresoi North sub-county, Nakuru County have been closed.

Omoto said the classrooms were found to be unsafe and there is a need for an urgent infrastructural upgrade to avert danger posed by the unsafe dilapidated buildings.

The decision by the government to close the classrooms came after parents stormed the school on Friday to protest their children learning in dilapidated classrooms.

Omoto said the classrooms which are in bad state will be renovated adding that students in the affected classrooms will be moved to the neighbouring Murinduko and Kerisoi primary schools to continue with their studies.

“Public health officers have confirmed that the schools are not safe for pupils learning, we have decided to temporarily shut some of the classes to embark on their renovation,” said Omoto as quoted by nation.co.ke.

During the Thursday evening incident, three pupils died, and at least 53 others were admitted at the hospital after lightning struck classrooms at the school.

The director said the government was in the process of installing arresters in all the primary and secondary schools in the region to prevent the incident from happening again.

“For the time being I wish to advise all school heads to send home students whenever they see signs of rain to avoid similar tragedies,” he added.
