Nine people sustained serious injuries after the vehicle they were travelling in was involved in an accident along Machakos - Kathiani road on Saturday evening .
The accident involving a 44-seater matatu happened at Kakonzi area in Machakos.
According to Upper Kiandani assistant chief Lawrence Munyao, the driver failed to negotiate a corner and the vehicle veered off the road, rolling several times before landing in the ditch.
Munyao told the press that the vehicle had carried family members who were coming from a burial ceremony in Kathiani heading to Nairobi.
"While the minibus reached Kwa Kakonzi the driver tried negociating with the corner but failed and the vehicle lost control and ended in a ditch," he said.
He noted that the driver could be new to the route, a reason why the accident happened. He observed that there is need for sign posts on the road to aid drivers in a bid to avert accidents.
" Accidents are being witnessed alot on this road because there are no sign posts and also bumps. If Kenya National Highways Authority would consider erecting bumps and sign posts then accidents would be reduced," he said.
A similar request had been made by Kathiani central member of county assembly Dominic Ndambuki who lamented that the road had become a hotbed of accidents.
