The Salaries and Remuneration Commission's (SRC) push for the reduction of the pension of retired Presidents: Mwai Kibaki and Daniel Moi has been rejected.
On Friday, Treasury issued a statement regarding the pension of the two former Heads of State after SRC presented its argument on the same.
The duo’s pension has been set at 80 percent of the salaries of the sitting President.
The perk also includes entertainment, house, fuel and electricity allowances.
A top official from Treasury said the move was reached after consultation from different stakeholders.
“We did not review the former President’s pension when SRC cut the sitting President’s pay because it was running against the Constitution,” said the official.
“The Constitution is supreme and it should take precedent, and not the Kenya Gazette.”
The commission has embarked on saving Sh8.5 billion in a bid to reduce the huge wage bill.
The cut affects different officials from the government including the President, his deputy, and lawmakers.
