The marathoner passed away on Friday. This came after dropping out of a race at Graz Marathon in Austria.

"It's with sadness to announce that Volare athlete Patrick Cheruiyot passed away. Patrick was an upcoming athlete, training in Kapkitony, Kenya," reads part of a statement by Volare Sports that was posted on Facebook, Sunday night.

According to the statement, Cheruiyot dropped out of the race after 3 kilometres.

He complained of a severe headache but a medical examination failed to reveal a serious condition and was allowed to travel back to Kenya.

His pains persisted upon arrival and was admitted in a Nairobi hospital.

Volare Sports who manages the athlete noted that the deceased got some Malaria treatment and a brain haemorrhage was discovered later after CT scan on Wednesday last week before his death two days later.

Cheruyoito was described as a modest, kind and appreciative person.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife Winny, his 2 children, his family at large and the teammates and close friends from Kapkitony. We will miss Patrick as a member of our team.-Volare Sports Management & Family," the statement noted.

The athlete participated in the 2018 Standard Chartered Marathon held in Nairobi and was ranked 5th.

He was also injured while taking part in Linz Marathon last year in April.
