Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Maliti has hit out at the Senate for calling for the arrest of Governor Alfred Mutua.
Addressing the press on Monday at his office, Maliti said that the governor was more than willing to appear before the Public Accounts and Investment Committee.
He observed that it was wrong for the Senate to claim Mutua snubbed summons yet the clerk of the committee had called to cancel the sittings supposed to be held in Machakos.
"The letter to Governor Mutua by the Senate was written on 25th September yet the governor had left the country on 23rd September thus there was no way he could have made it," said Maliti.
"Secondly the clerk of the committee had called the clerk of the county assembly to confirm the cancellation of the sitting in Machakos and the governor was not notified of the change of venue," he added.
Maliti intimated that the summons are a witch-hunt against Governor Mutua citing that area Senator Boniface Kabaka had sworn to ensure Mutua is arrested and prosecuted.
"We have seen there is politics inside the whole thing and it's wrong for the Senate Committee to play politics in such matters," he said.
He noted that whereas the Senate has oversight powers, they cannot take over the responsibility of the oversight by the county assemblies stating that demeaning Mutua is improper and uncalled for.
Senate’s Public Accounts and Investments Committee (CPAIC) has directed the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to arrest the Machakos Governor for snubbing summons.
