The government has generated over Sh2 million within a month in form of fines following illicit brew crackdown at Nyamira, County Commissioner Amos Mariba has said.
In August, Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i ordered the commissioner to run riot against brewers, lamenting that such incidents had derailed development.
"We can't have a scenario where people are drinking from morning to dawn. An action must be taken and the government will not tolerate this impunity," he had warned.
And for the last one month, Mr Amos Mariba and his team have ransacked villages, arresting brewers and taking them to court as per the law.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Mariba confirmed that over Sh2 million have been collected through fines imposed on those found culpable.
"The operation has been going on well. We have managed to arrest over 80 people and in the process, over Sh2 million have been paid in form of fines.
"We are not about to stop. The law is very clear. Illicit brew is unacceptable and those involved will be arrested. Our officers are vigilant," he said.
Once arrested, victims are fined up to Sh20,000 depending the size of their businesses. Manga, Nyamira South and Nyamira North are the most affected.
Last week, a group of illicit brewers led by one Pamela Nyerere from Masaba North threatened to curse Dr Matiang'i, accusing him of 'destroying businesses'.
