Bomet County will have a third governor since the inception of devolved system of government in 2013 on Tuesday, a senior official has confirmed.
On Monday, Governor Joyce Laboso, who took over from pioneer county boss Isaac Ruto in 2017, passed on at Nairobi Hospital.
For several months now, Dr Laboso has been confined to hospital bed, something that saw her moving to London and India to seek medication.
Earlier on Monday, her Communication team had given hope to supporters when announcement about her improving status was made.
“The governor is recuperating and is under observation by her doctors who have recommended [for] her enough rest and limited visitation for speedy recovery,” County Communications Director Ezra Kirui said in the statement.
Last week, a section of leaders led by Dr Hillary Barchok, the deputy governor, asked county residents to pray for the 58-year-old county boss.
"Let's pray for our governor. She is still in hospital and I am glad to say she is improving. As a county, let us join her family during this trying period," he said without disclosing the facility where she's admitted.
Former Konoin MP Julius Kones added: "High octane politics should stop. We should pray for our governor. Let other things come later."
In compliance with article 182, Dr Barchok will now assume the office until 2022 polls when he shall decide whether or not to seek reelection.
The curriculum expert, a former university dean, is expected to take oath on Tuesday in a ceremony that will be conducted at the county offices from 9am.
"Preparations are underway and an internal communication has been made. This is strictly in compliance with the constitution to avoid the scenario of vacancy," said the official who did not wish to be named.
Dr Barchok will become the third governor to assume office under such circumstances. In Nyeri, Governor Samuel Wamathai took over after the death of Nderitu Gachagua.
Also, the current Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga took over from Wahome Gakuru, who also died last year after winning 2017 polls.
