Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Waiguru has made a passionate appeal to Dr Hillary Barchok, the next governor of Bomet to pick a woman as his deputy.
Waiguru made the appeal on Saturday during the burial ceremony of the late Bomet Governor Dr Joyce Laboso in Fort Tennan, Kisumu County.
Waiguru said that installing a woman as Deputy Governor would go a long way in honouring Dr Laboso who, she said, was passionate about seeing women ascend to leadership positions.
"We request that the governor who is taking over chooses a lady Deputy Governor to honour our sister, " she appealed.
According to the Constitution, it is the Deputy Governor who will assume the reins of power in Bomet to finish the remaining term.
This was envisaged in the Constitution so as to remove the need for holding a by-election in event of the death or incapacitation of a sitting governor.
Fresh elections will only be held after the completion of the term.
Dr Barchok, has not given any indication, at least not publicly, of who he will want to deputise him going forward.
Governor Waiguru was a close friend of the late Bomet county boss.
