According to Kenya National Focal Point on Small Arms and Light Weapons Director Mohammed Amin, the guns must be handed over by September 30.

The date will mark the end as the amnesty month end, which had been offered by the government for illegal gun owners to surrender their weapons without being prosecuted.

He cautioned Kenyans against covering up for civilians in possession of unlicensed arms, warning that they could be used against them through murder, robberies and terrorism.

“These weapons can be used against you,” he said, during the International Peace Day in Nairobi on Saturday.

According to Mr Amin, about 8000 arms have already been confiscated from illegally licenced civilians.

He added that between 550,000 and 650,000 illegal arms are currently in the hands of civilians, urging them to hand them over to the nearby police stations.

Mr Amin said that the guns will be destroyed by the state using a high tech machine, as the government seeks to maintain peace and security.

“The machine is environment-friendly and can crash the weapons to make scrap,” he added.
