A section of youths under the umbrella of the Building Bridges Initiative Youth Congress in Kisumu have opposed the candidature of Elisha Jack Oraro for county assembly Speaker.
Oraro has been the deputy speaker and Kisumu North ward MCA. He has been serving actively since Onyango Oloo's ouster last year.
Addressing the press in Kisumu on Tuesday, the Congress National Chairman Okoth Opande, the Secretary Kennedy Oliech and the Kisumu County Women Representative Roseline Abungu for the congress, called on ODM leadership to nominate another candidate.
“We are requesting the ODM party to kindly nominate the candidate for the speaker’s position from outside the assembly so has not to occasion an event of a by-election in the Kisumu North Ward,” said Opande.
According to Opande, ODM should not allow a by-election to be held since Oraro is still alive.
The National Congress chairman, however, lauded Oraro for leading the assembly with a lot of professionalism in his capacity as the interim Speaker but urged him not to relinquish his role as Kisumu North Ward MCA.
He asked Oraro to wait for 2022 to contest for the speaker's position.
“Oraro’s ambition was to be a member of county assembly which North Kisumu Ward gave him with a lot of satisfaction, that’s why we request him to continue serving them in the capacity he was given as the party nominates someone else,” he added.
If Oraro goes to the ballot, he will face off with two lawyers; Kenneth Amondi and Jared Sala who have declared their interest to vie for the position.
