Mombasa residents are in panic mode after a gang armed with machetes descended on them Monday night.
The alleged Wakali Kwanza gang members attacked Bamburi residents indiscriminately. The killer gang attacked Kwa Bulo, Bamburi Mwisho, Bombolulu and Kisimani areas.
Bamburi Mwisho was the most affected and 13 people were injured. Confirming the attack, Mombasa County Police Commander Johnston Ipara said four among the 13 are in critical condition.
Those injured were treated at Yeshua Clinic then transferred to Coast General Hospital for further treatment.
Residents in this areas resorted to social media channels to warn family and friends. They advised their loved ones to remain indoors or void coming home.
"People are running into their homes. There is tension. Police are all over," another resident, only identified as Katana.
Nyali sub-county Police Commander Simon Thirikwa assured locals that police officers were pursuing the gang.
"Several gunshots have been heard. Police are now going after those youths who managed to escape after stealing from several stalls," Mary Odhiambo, a resident stated.
This is not the first time gangs have wreaked havoc in Mombasa. There are other known criminal groups besides Wakali Kwanza and some have juvenile members.
