Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho has sent a message wishing retired President Daniel Moi a long life as Kenyans celebrate a holiday day that was once referred to as Moi Day.
In his message on Instagram, Thursday, Joho argued Kenyans to use this day to help the less fortunate in society.
''I wish H.E Retired President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi good health and long life as Kenyans mark Moi day. Let us dedicate the day to selfless service to the people and remember the less fortunate in our society. Happy Moi Day,''' said Joho.
More Kenyans and leaders gave out their different views during this day.
Citizen TV journalist Linus Kaikai in a tweet said; ''MOI was a serious political adult; fully in charge of the national homestead he headed. He genuinely cared for National Unity, running a Govt largely representative of the face of Kenya. He fully protected our territorial borders. History will judge this man kindly. #MoiDay."
Nairobi-based human rights activist Boniface Mwangi and blogger Robert Alai, however, did not have kind words to the retired president.
''President Moi was a thief, a murderer and a dictator. The two thieves ruining Kenya today, Uhuru and Ruto are Moi political sons. The son of a snake is a snake, the son of a thief, is a thief. Moi wasn't a good president, stop photoshopping history,'' Mwangi said in a tweet.
''When Moi was President, everyone wanted to run to a foreign country. There wasn’t much hope and dissent was ruthlessly quelled. Some fools calls that principled. That was incompetence, greed and dictatorship combined,'' noted Alai.
City lawyer Steve Ogolla on his part asked if Kenyans are happy now that Moi, whom they termed a bad leader retired.
''DURING Moi's reign, you said the country was steeped in corruption, co-option and cronyism. You needed him out. Now that's he's retired, I hope you're happy that your country is truly open and honest. Otherwise, you may be part of the problem,'' he said.
The government declared October 10 a public holiday in line with a High Court ruling made in November 2017.
