Age is nothing but a number as epitomized by the story of one Abubakar Mohamed from Garissa County.
Abubakar, commonly known as ‘Mheshimiwa Abuu’ is only 22 years old but under his belt are years of experience working with the community through various roles.
For instance, he is serving as a volunteer Youth Ambassador and as Deputy Director of the International Youth Society representing the country. His star seems to be shining even brighter as he was recently named a volunteer Peace Co-ordinator of Dynamic Peace Rescue Mission International also representing Kenya.
One may wonder, what makes such a young person whose peers are most probably moving from one entertainment joint to another to get involved in community service?
“Deep in me, I take this as a call. It is the only way I give back to society and I never get paid but I do it from the deepest part of my heart. I see myself not just as a future leader for Muslims, but as a leader for all Kenyans, therefore, it is important for every youth to understand that tribalism is an enemy of progress in our democracy and social life," he says.
Abubakar has been able to reach out to the community he serves in various ways. One of them is through radio talks, social media which reaches many youths and also one-on-one engagement with his peers.
As a result of the combination of the three mediums, he has been able to impact over 1,000 youths both directly and indirectly. He has been able to use that opportunity to solve problems, sharing his stories and experience thereby inspiring many not just in his native Garissa County but across the width and breadth of his beloved motherland.
Taking a glimpse of some of the organizations that he has worked with, it’s amazing how much spotlight he has been able to get to partner with some of the biggest organisations not just in Kenya but globally.
Some of the organizations include Garissa Muslim Youth Organization, The Kesho Alliance, The Silver Lining Kenya Woman Kind Kenya, Action Aid Kenya, Garissa Civil Society, Aga Khan Foundation, Equal Access International; Kenya Redcross, Autism Light Inc among others.
Abubakar’s work has seen him run programmes such as helping and supporting orphans, free cancer awareness in Garissa, free distribution of water to Garissa villages and the fight against human rights violation.
Abubakar is that extraordinary character doing so much with the little he has. He is a beacon light of hope lighting up the dull voices and spirits of the county he calls home.
