Thirdway Alliance boss Ekuru Aukot is currently crisscrossing the country, tabling the Punguza Mizigo Bill to county assemblies for debate.

For the bill to proceed to Parliament or even for referendum, it must be supported by at least 24 county assemblies across the country, something that seems to be a tall order.

But on Thursday, Tanga Tanga team, which is closely associated with Deputy President William Ruto, said it would rather support a referendum by Punguza Mizigo than BBI.

"If there is referendum coming, your Excellency, we shall put aside friendship and other issues, do not undermine the Punguza Mizigo initiative because Ekuru Aukot comes from Turkana.

"We want to tell those other principals, if you want Kenyans to get justice and even have something on the table, we shall support Punguza Mizigo, if your want a referendum. If it's all about expanding executive, forget about it," said Oscar Sudi, one of the members.

Dr Ruto is in an dilemma, with his boss President Uhuru Kenyatta supporting Building Bridges Initiative, whose report is expected to recommend for a referendum.

Already, major parties led by ODM have dismissed Punguza Mizigo initiative, arguing that public participation was not done by those pushing for it.

"We are waiting for the BBI report that has all the issues of the people. The questions in Aukot's proposals have not undergone stakeholders’ consultations. Let us wait for October when we will have the BBI report and thereafter a referendum that will decide on the fate of Kenyans," said Senator James Orengo.

The declaration by Tanga Tanga team could further deteriorate relationship between President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP William Ruto, a move that could hike political temperatures.
