Angry villagers in Karombo, Kodawo village, Nyahera sub-location, Kisumu County on Saturday torched a house belonging to a suspect accused of killing a form one student.
The incident occurred during the burial of the deceased identified as Violet Atieno, a student at St Antony Dago Kokore Secondary School whose body was found under a culvert in a thicket in Nyahera.
The deceased's mother Evaline Akeng’o noted that she suspects that the killing was done within their home.
“I am saddened and shocked by this incident. It is known the killing was done within our village and we all know that but some of us are afraid to raise alarm,” said Akeng’o.
She further blamed the area assistant chief Churchill Oremo for recording a statement at a Kisumu police station indicating that the deceased was insane while the suspect indicated that Akeng'o was a prostitute.
“The area assistant chief recorded a statement that my daughter was insane, while the suspect indicated that I am a prostitute and that’s why you see none of them here,” she added.
According to the irate villagers, it was unusual for North Kisumu location administration officers to miss such occasions, adding that their attempt to reach chief Peter Nyange and his assistant Oremo bore no fruit.
Attempts to get a comment from chief Nyange proved futile as the administrator hang up after realising the caller was a journalist.
