Former Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore’s succession has continued to elicit mixed reactions from different leaders and Kenyans at large.
Former Subukia MP and Human Rights Activist Koigi Wa Wamwere has also weighed in on the matter after the mobile service provider named Michael Joseph as the Interim CEO a day after the announcement of Collymore’s death.
Wamwere has said that he will not be a happy man if the company appoints yet another foreigner to take over the positions.
In an interview with NTV AM Live on Wednesday, Koigi said that the firm needs to give a Kenyan a chance to exercise his or her capabilities as far as the leadership of the firm is concerned.
He insisted that there are hundreds of Kenyans who have worked with Collymore and other firms in the telecommunication sector and they can do better than foreigners.
“I think it would be sad if a foreigner takes over. If anything, Collymore proved that a black man can succeed as a leader of a big company,” he said.
Joseph was named the Interim CEO on Tuesday. He served as the company's CEO between 2001 and 2010 before handing over to Collymore but still remained as a board member.
Collymore died after a long battle with cancer at his home in Nairobi on Monday
