Speaking to KTN's Sophia Wanuna on the Big Story show, the county boss poked holes into the narrative peddled in some quarters that women in Kenya were underrepresented.

He said that the position was redundant.

"You know the position is redundant," he said.

"What message does it send. It sends a message that one, women are underrepresented and maybe they are being pushed down by men but also it sends a message that women are not capable of being elected by their own right which is not right," he added.

The second term governor rejected the idea that women are not capable of being elected in contests where they are pitted against men, rattling off a list of women who have successfully run for positions in contests that featured men.

He named Governor Charity Ngilu, Wavinya Ndeti and Beth Mugo as examples of women who have beat men in elections.

Governor Mutua called on more creative ways away from affirmative action to involve women in the leadership of the country.

He, however, called for party nominations of women to be retained and for constituencies to be created for women.
