Rosemary Wanja was reportedly attacked and stung to death by bees while picking tea in her farm on Friday morning.

People who witnessed the incident said that the 50-year-old stumbled on the insects in the farm, after which they stung and left her unconscious.

One of her relatives, Augustine Njagi, said that his attempts to rescue the deceased were futile, forcing him to retreat.

This is after he rushed to the scene in response to her distress calls, attempting to fight off the deadly insects using twigs.

"I fought the bees with green twigs but they also attacked me and I took off for my life," he said.

He added that it's only when a combined team of residents and a bodaboda rider arrived that they managed to salvage the woman and rushed her to hospital.

However, she died on arrival at the Runyenjes Sub-County Hospital.

Some said that such an incident has never been seen in the region for a long time, among them 80-year-old Mzee Zachary Nyaga.

"The incident of this nature is the first one to happen in our village since Independence," he said.
