In a bid to foster equality, the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report has made drastic proposals that might see Kenyans share public facilities with top state officials going forward.

For instance, the document states that Cabinet Secretaries will have to use public hospitals and send their children to public schools, should it be approved and implemented as it is.

The report indicates that since its the cabinet secretaries who manage these facilities, they should be subjected to the very same.

“If it is good enough for Kenyans, it should be good enough for you… All Ministers should use public facilities and services. These principles should be reflected in the Counties with the County Executives,” it reads in part as quoted by the Star.

It proposes that state officials with a salary exceeding Sh200,000 have their increments limited with an eye on the tough economic times the country is grappling with.

Similarly, the report demands that those mentioned in any form of irregularity to step down immediately, and further suggests that ministers be picked from people with upright conduct.

“Leaders and managers should understand that resignation is not only appropriate where direct responsibility is established: it helps start with a new slate so the changes that the institution requires can be undertaken,” it reads.

The document recommends that those being appointed into the cabinet must be people with integrity, and who enjoy public and professional respect.

Currently, public hospitals are grappling with a shortage of drugs and recurrent medic strikes, problems citizens could share with their CSs should the report be implemented.
