Up to 37 orphans in Nakuru County that excelled in last year`s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination have received four-year secondary school scholarships courtesy of the National Government Affirmative Action Fund.
Speaking Tuesday after awarding beneficiaries Sh50, 000 cheque to each for term one fees, Nakuru County Women Representative Liza Chelule said the first phase of the program will cost the fund Sh2 million to enable bright but vulnerable children who garnered 390 marks and above in the examination enroll in various schools across the country.
“The next batch of beneficiaries will be duly identified and enrolled in the program in January next year in a move that seeks to enable at least 250 vulnerable but bright children to access education over the next five years,” said Chelule.
Chelule appealed to citizens across the county`s 55 wards to help the Masomo Mwangaza initiative reach out to more deserving cases next year.
The lawmaker urged the corporate community and other financially privileged citizens to help needy children in the county by adopting children from humble backgrounds and educating them for their better future.
Beneficiaries and their parents extolled the initiative as timely and bound to transform the destiny of many children.
The Masomo Mwangaza Program comes to complement similar bursary schemes steered by the regional government and the county`s 11 Constituency Development Fund Committees that have since been streamlined to enable the scheme capture as many deserving cases as possible.
