Benjamin Musyoka, a 37-year-old year old man, an inmate at Machakos prison, managed to do perform well in the just released 2014 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination results.
The 37-year-old scooped the top student in the prisons’ 2014 KCSE results, managing to score an average grade of B- of 55 points.
Speaking on Friday to the media practitioners who had visited the prison after news of the performance, Musyoka stated that he was happy although he was not able to celebrate with his family as it is forbidden by rules of the prison.
The top scorer confirmed that previously he was a student of Kampala University.
“I was a student at Kampala University in Uganda studying a Bachelors of Education and Business studies before I was arrested for murder charges. I decided to start attending secondary school studies instead of staying idle as it can retard my mind and I have hopes of completing my studies in future when I am released,” said Musyoka
Musyoka requested for his case be heard and determined soon, as it had been postponed several times stating that he had gone through the rehabilitation session.
He however urged the National government together with the ministry of Education to introduce digital learning systems in prisons.
“Education is going digital in all the schools in our country, therefore I call upon the Education Ministry and our government to introduce the same in prisons so that we are not left behind,” added Musyoka.
Musyoka is accused of murder, and has been in prison for the last six years and his case is yet to be concluded.
