Police officers in Nyamira County have been asked not to sleep on the job during the census exercise which is set to commence on Saturday, August 24, 2019, countrywide.
Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama speaking on Sunday at Nyamira Central PAG church during the official opening of a newly built sanctuary appealed to police officers to provide security to residents during the crucial exercise.
"Residents should be assured of their security during the census exercise because thugs may pretend to be officers recruited to conduct the census exercise but instead end up stealing from poor locals. I challenge police officers to intensify security patrols especially at night when the census exercise will be ongoing," said Nyagarama.
He urged Nyamira County Commissioner Amos Mariba to coordinate matters security in the county in a bid to curb criminal activities.
Nyagarama also called on Nyamira residents to remain at home to ensure that they are counted by the officers mandated to carry out the exercise.
"Nyamira residents especially those who consume alcohol must ensure they are sober and in their residential homes to be counted. Local politicians should be at the forefront pushing people to be counted and not urging them to boycott the exercise," he added.
