After managing just 12 clean sheets last season in 34 premier league matches, Gor Mahia's to-do list this transfer window was always going to be strengthening its leaky defence. And so far that has been the case.
Western Stima centre-back Maurice Ojwang is the latest addition to K'Ogalo’s backline. The sought-after defender was once a prime target for former Kogalo coach Jose “Ze Maria” Marcelo, but the Brazilian didn’t receive the clubs backing to struck a deal for the dynamic defender.
After seeing his side lose 7-1 on aggregate to RSB Berkane in the CAF cup quarterfinals last season certainly Hassan Oktay was expected to be a busy man this preseason as he needs to work on his defensive line. But could Ojwang be the solution to K'Ogalo’s defensive problems?
Ojwang impressed many last season with Stima, captaining them to safety as they avoided relegation. An energetic, technically gifted centre back, he represents a huge upgrade to K'Ogalo’s defenders. That is not to say, any of the current crop are not good enough. The former Stima man's presence next season will be worth noticing.
His leadership qualities will be tested next season as he is likely to pair up with former teammate Joash Onyango.
K'Ogalo will now be hoping they can use their new defensive backline to stake a claim in next season's tough campaign and maybe clinch the title for a successive fourth time in a row.
