A section of Mt Kenya religious leaders and businessmen have endorsed former presidential candidate Joseph Nyaga as President Uhuru Kenyatta's successor before 2022.
Led by Bishop Johana Ndirangu of Akorino Faithful Church, the group has said that Nyagah is the best man to safeguard the interests of the community after Uhuru ends his second term in office.
The leaders said that Nyagah has proven to be a true leader to take over the leadership mantle because of his vast experience and knowledge on matters of governance.
The group also said that Nyagah once staged a presidential campaign and he knows the needs of Kenyans, adding that he won't disappoint if given the chance.
Rev Patrick Kinuthia of Worldwide Church of God in Murang’a echoed the sentiments of Ndirangu saying that the region will not be left behind if it endorses him to assume the role when that time.
He argued that his political career spans close to two decades, which makes him the best bet for the region.
“It is paramount that the region goes to the 2022 General Election speaking with one voice. Currently, leaders in the region are sharply divided, which is not a good thing,” he said.
The leaders asked the community to rally behind Nyagah to protect its interests when Uhuru hangs his political boots. The endorsement comes amid speculations that President Uhuru is likely to remain in office after ending his tenure.
According to Former Jubilee Vice Chairman David Murathe, Uhuru is too young to exit politics. Central Organizations of Trade Unions (COTU) boss Francis Atwoli is also of the opinion that Uhuru is here to stay.
Murang'a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria, Former Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri and Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru are among those considered able to succeed Uhuru upon his retirement.
The launch of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) has left speculations on Uhuru's plan before 2022.
