It has emerged that police officers engaging in gospel related missions have been banned from preaching while in official attires. These latest instructions from Vigilance House could yet again evoke a debate on the welfare of officers who are dedicated to spreading the gospel.
On Wednesday, Deputy Inspector General of Police Edward Njoroge Mbugua warned, unless, within a police institution like colleges, it is unlawful for any police officer to preach donned in work uniform.
"Officers are encouraged to separate official duties and private engagement and act appropriately," he said as quoted by the star.
A number of officers have been captured on video preaching in market places while others are engaged in official gospel music production.
Mr. Mbugua's directive comes just a week after his contract was extended by President Uhuru Kenyatta, despite succession battles witnessed for his docket.
He ordered that those involved in preaching can, however, don in official uniforms when presiding over services at police colleges or functions organized by the police service.
Ironically, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission this week ranked the National Police Service as one of the most corrupt institutions in Kenya.
At Kisumu on Wednesday, a number of officers were arrested when soliciting bribes from motorists by EACC officers.
