It has emerged that a section of Nairobi Members of the County Assembly had organized a trip to Dubai to scuttle plans to impeach embattled Governor Mike Sonko.
The county assembly speaker Beatrice Elachi on Tuesday confirmed to the media that she was aware of the plans of the lawmakers to leave the country after the governor was barred from accessing his office.
She, however, said that he was forced to stop the trip because she felt it would raise concerns. The speaker has insisted that no MCA has travelled out of the country as planned.
“No member has travelled. When they realized what was happening they refused. This would have landed them in trouble. It was wrong. Members are allowed to travel, but this was not right,” said Ms Elachi.
Elachi, however, raised eyebrows why the MCAs are being faulted yet the trip could have also included the members of the executive had it been there.
The speaker said that they are ready to be accountable to the people of Nairobi, adding that going for a trip is not an option at the moment.
“Let them give out the whole list because it was a trip for the Executive, not MCAs,” she said. Sonko has maintained that he is innocent and his woes are politically instigated.
