Members of Parliament drawn from Bomet County have called for calm amid increasing pressures on new area governor Hilary Barchok to pick a woman as his deputy.
Barchok officially took the position on Thursday, following the death of Dr Joyce Laboso who succumbed to cancer at the Nairobi Hospital on July 29.
The MPs; Dominic Koskei (Sotik), Brighton Yegon (Konoin), Gideon Koskei (Chepalungu) and Beatrice Kones (Bomet East) told the county boss to take his time.
The lawmakers urged the county chief to carefully pick his preferred deputy, with Kones stressing on the need for him to be allowed time to settle before making the decision.
“It is a matter of tradition that a newly married man cannot immediately run looking for a second wife even before they settle in their matrimonial home and sire children," stated Kones.
The MPs made the remarks in the presence of Deputy President William Ruto, even as Narok Governor Samuel Tunai, speaking on behalf of the Council of Governors, appealed to Barchok to pick a female deputy.
Similar remarks were made by Kones who insisted that the deputy governor should hail from Sotik, a region Laboso represented in Parliament before her gubernatorial win in 2017.
Barchok took his oath of office at the Bomet Green Stadium.
