It was during his visit to western Kenya when he went to Kisumu which was his last visit before he went back to Nairobi.

This was hardly six months since Tom Mboya was assassinated in Nairobi.

Kenyatta was purposely going to Kisumu to open a Hospital that was built at Manyatta called Nyanza Provincial General Hospital which is commonly known as Russia hospital. It was a donation from Russia thus the name.

On reaching the outskirts of Kisumu, there were locals carrying placards and poster a written, "where is Tom Mboya?". Some even hurled stones to the motorcade but Kenyatta went forward to Kisumu while shouting "ndume! ndume!" which was a slogan of Odinga's party Kenya People's Union (KPU).

In Luo land, people believed that Kenyatta had a hand in the demise of Mboya, therefore they were rioting demanding for him. When the President stood at the podium to give a speech there was an argument between him and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya's first Vice President.

It should be remembered that three years before, Oginga had flown off the handle with Kenyatta. He had started his party that he named KPU. This was a public spat where the furious Kenyatta talked carelessly towards Odinga out of rage.

This was when a stone was hurled to the podium where Kenyatta was addressing from. Police officers opened fire, shooting anyone who was in the front while securing the President to his motorcade.

Many people lost lives. It was a mourning Saturday to the Luo nation. Along the way, people were throwing stones at Kenyatta's motorcade. The following day, Oginga Odinga was arrested and detained together with other KPU party leaders.

From this day, Kenyatta never stepped his leg to Kisumu until his death.
