In a strongly worded joint statement, the two lashed out at the story as false, saying that it had the potential of causing damage.

"Despite clear denials, a false story ran in a UK newspaper today speculating about the relationship between The Duke of Sussex and The Duke of Cambridge, " the statement read.

"For brothers who care so deeply about the issues surrounding mental health, the use of inflammatory language in this way is offensive and potentially harmful," it continued.

Following the decision by Prince Harry and his wife Meghan to step back from their royal duties, there has been widespread speculation that the relationship between the two brothers has grown poor.

Media reports reported that the the Sussex couple had not consulted members of the royal family before taking the dramatic decision.

The joint statement by William and Harry fell short of naming the 'scandalous' report but the Guardian reported that they could have been referring to a report ran by the Times newspaper that said that the two were not in good terms.
