Fire outbreak at Bahati PCEA girls' school in Nakuru caused the death of one student while injuring others.
The Saturday inferno also saw the destruction of property whose worth is yet to be established.
The Education Ministry together with the school's board of management chair Francis Mbugua has denied claims that the deceased student was burnt to death.
It is alleged that the girl, a form Three, was in the dorm when the tragedy struck.
Mbugua has instead pointed out choking as what led to the learner's demise.
Reports indicate that the ill-fated dormitory housed about 97 students who lost their property and personal effects following the inferno.
It was not immediately established what the deceased was undertaking in the dormitory, while her colleagues were conducting night preps when the fire broke out.
"We also wonder what the student was doing alone in the dormitory. Investigations are underway and will find out," Mbugua told the Standard.
Speaking on an anonymous basis, learners told the Standard how they were preparing to settle for their preps when they spotted smoke from the dormitory.
Shocked, some expressed their helplessness on how they could not rescue their belongings.
The subordinate staff helped put off the fire now that the firefighter could not make it after breaking down.
It was only after having the fire off when the dead student was found.
One of the parents urged the administration to install the dormitory with surveillance equipment, while area MP Kimani Ngunjiri called upon the government to aid the school in resumption exercise.
The MP promised that his office would help with Sh2 million towards the same.
Bahati DCC Mutua Kisilu urged parents to remain calm while investigations were ongoing, whereas Educational Director for Rift Valley John Ololtuaa said the school won't be closed, as the management was able to handle the girls with the available facilities.
"The school is in a position to provide for the affected students and learning will continue," Ololtuaa said, as quoted by the Standard.
