Speaking to Nation, Higgins Mbugua, who was involved in Mariga's campaigns, said the police openly told them that they were told to keep off.

“Whereas we enjoyed their services during the campaigns, the officers informed us that they had been instructed to stop working with us. Some of them were redeployed and a new team brought to provide security during the elections,” he told the Nation on Saturday.

Mbugua alleged that the police failed to heed their calls for security on Thursday morning, which left some members of the campaign team exposed.

According to the strategist, some police officers watched and failed to intervene as members of the campaign team were harassed by rowdy youth.

“We spent the entire morning seeking security, but no one would listen to us. More enforcers were only sent in the afternoon and the officers in most of the polling stations watched as the harassment went on,” he added.

Among those who were openly roughed up included; former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale and Kimilili lawmaker Didmus Barasa, who even lost his signature red cap in the scuffle.
