Among the persons who spent years with Jomo Kenyatta at the Lokitaung Prison was Achieng Oneko, the tall Luo man who later became MP of Nakuru Town after independence.
And while not so much is said about the man who would later serve in Kenyatta's post-independence government as an Assistant Minister, his loyalty stands out.
According to Kenyatta's then-lawyer Fitz Desouza, Oneko even put his life on the line to protect the ageing Kenyatta while they were abroad for the Lancaster talks.
While Kenyatta slept in the interior room, Oneko would sleep on the outer one at their hotel, and slept with his bed across Kenyatta's door to ensure that no one accessed him.
This came at a time when Kenyatta's life was considered in danger thanks to increasing death threats on him, says DeSouza in his book "Forward to Freedom".
"With the continued death threats against Kenyatta, it was the mild-mannered Oneko who was, literally, putting his life on the line for him," he writes as quoted by Daily Nation.
But apart from the loyalty, the two were also close to an extent that Kenyatta entrusted Oneko with the role of betting whoever wanted to see him during the conferences.
"There was only one other person close to Kenyatta during the Lancaster House conferences; anyone wishing to see the Kikuyu leader at his hotel had first to get past Achieng Oneko, who slept in the next room, barring the door with his bed," DeSouza notes in his book.
Oneko took a ministerial position as the cabinet minister for Communication after Kenyatta became President, and was at the same time elected Nakuru Town MP.
He, however, called it quits with Kenyatta three years later after accompanying Vice President Jaramogi Oginga to the then newly formed Kenya People Union (KPU) in a massive walkout.
