A report by the former Auditor General Edward Ouko indicates that the county government of Bomet spent a whooping Sh9.9 million to furnish furniture following the swearing in of Governor Hillary Barchok.
Barchok, who succeeded the late Governor Joyce Laboso, was on Tuesday put to task to explain the expenditures when he appeared before the Senate County Public Accounts and Investments Committee.
The county boss, The Star reports, used the said amount to furnish the newly constructed office valued at Sh60.85 million.
The report shows that he used Sh110,130 to purchase an executive chair and Sh78,000 for a chair meant for his personal assistant.
The executive desk cost the governor Sh713, 000 while the conference table was ordered for Sh398,000.
The county also used Sh293, 701 on a credenza.
The audit report also showed that Sh4 million was used to construct an electric fence, Sh25 million on excavation while Sh3 million was used to create a perimeter wall around the administrative block for the county boss.
The members of the Senate committee were angered by the expenditure as they grilled the county boss to set the record straight over the matter.
In his defense, Barchok said that the procurement was undertaken before he assumed office.
"Procurement was done sometime in 2016 and when we came in, we found the chairs and tables in the incomplete building. What we did was to make the payments because we got the documents," Barchok said, as quoted by The Star.
The committee comprised of Chairman Moses Kajwang (Homa Bay), Kimani Wamatangi (Kiambu), Sam Ongeri (Kisii) and Ledama Olekina (Narok).
