In a tweet on Thursday, the renowned scholar said that it was right that President Uhuru had ended the anniversary commemoration and not any other president.

Prof Kiyiapi, however, called for the mausoleum to be opened to the general public as a historical site.

The mausoleum is situated in the capital city Nairobi.

"It is right that - Uhuru Kenyatta as President, and NOT any other President has brought to an end the 41-year old annual commemoration of the Kenya's first republican President, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. The mausoleum should be opened to the general public, as a historical site, " Prof Kiyiapi wrote on Twitter.

President Uhuru announced the move on Thursday at the Holy Family Basilica, saying that the decision had been reached after wide consultations in the Kenyatta family.

Successive governments have held the anniversary commemoration to honour Jomo Kenyatta as the founding father of the nation.

The first president died in his sleep on August, 22, 1978 in the Port City of Mombasa.
